Yes, IRIS2 is committed to, but this is not the shift of funds that will boost the slower-than-expected government satellite spending. The FT writes today that Franco-German funds are likely shifting from manned fighter jets to a Combat Cloud system in response to the preeminent role drones are taking in the Ukrainian war. IRIS2 is part of this cloud, but it's unlikely to form the backbone - there won't be a backbone. The Combat Cloud will likely employ a mesh of high-flying drones near the battlefield, providing instant, line-of-sight, tactical connection and potentially aircraft further behind. LEO/MEO connectivity is part of the design, but it's the costliest part. It will provide strategic picture updates to the high command and integrate maritime assets at long range, but the cloud stands on its own.
