VMO2 - comment
Prior to the Q3 numbers tomorrow, it is being reported that VMO2 is undertaking a strategic retreat, pausing further fibre expansion and upgrades to its existing HFC network. Instead, the company is looking to use Openreach's network to extend its reach, while targeting up to £600m of annual cost savings, including potentially 4,000 job cuts. The reported changes represent a significant shift away from infrastructure investment towards cash preservation, reflecting the challenging economics of competing fibre networks.
For bondholders, lower capex and a substantial cost-reduction programme would support free cash flow and deleveraging. However, there will be increased access costs. Ultimately, it appears the return on new fibre is insufficient. The reported plans also include a potential reduction in the £200m annual dividend. Tomorrow's results should provide more clarity on the scale and timing of the savings, but the key question remains whether improved cash generation can drive deleveraging.
